Mid-Year Checkup: Simple Guidelines for Monitoring Car Health

We’re halfway through 2024 which means it’s time to check on your car. While yearly maintenance appointments are critical, a mid-year assessment at your local Pep Boys can help catch minor issues before they turn into major problems. Follow our suggestions to maximize your vehicle’s safety:

Assess Visually

  • Check your tires for punctures or uneven wear. Run your hand along the side wall of each tire to feel any bulges. Use a tire pressure gauge to make sure your tire pressure aligns with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Make sure your windshield wipers are clear of debris and functioning properly. If you notice streaking or missed spots they might need replacing.
  • Look at all your lights. Dimmed or flickering headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, or reverse lights could indicate a failing bulb.

Monitor Internally

  • Ensure all fluids (oil, coolant, etc.) are topped up. Check your owner’s manual for manufacturer recommendations on optimal oil change intervals for your vehicle.
  • Look closely at your air and cabin filters. Clean filters keep your car free of dust, dirt, and pollutants. If you notice clogging or build up, consider replacing them.
  • Check on your spark plugs. If you have issues starting your car or detect a rough idle it could be time for new plugs.

Listen carefully:

  • Pay attention to unusual sounds. Promptly addressing issues caused by noises like grinding, squealing, or knocking can help avoid costly repairs later.
  • Noises when breaking might indicate worn-out brake pads or issues with the brake discs. This is your car’s way of telling you service is needed.
