Customer Service Advisor

The Customer Service Advisor (CSA) position is for that individual who is looking to start a career in the automotive service industry. As a CSA you will have an opportunity to work with customers in need of vehicle repair and maintenance, by providing excellent customer service, advice and repair/ maintenance estimates. Part of your learning experience will be computer based E-Learning that will include modules that cover basic automotive systems, customer service best practices and learning centered around PBY systems as well as instructor-led training and training sessions provided by our vendor partners.

All of this prepares you for the next step in your career. If you have the want, desire, and drive you can work towards the role of Assistant Service Manager. If you find that your interest lies more with hands on repair and maintenance of vehicles then you would have the opportunity to move to the shop in the role of General Service Technician (GST).

General Service Tech

Our General Service Tech (GST) is for that individual who is looking to start a career in the automotive repair industry. As a GST you will have an opportunity to learn basic automotive repair services, to include, basic vehicle safety inspection, mounting and balancing of tires, engine oil change, battery testing and replacement, and performing other basic maintenance services. Part of your learning experience will be computer based E-Learning that will include modules that cover basic theory of automotive systems such as brakes, and suspension as well as modules that will teach you the value of, and why more and more manufactures today require the use of synthetic oil’s versus conventional.

All of this prepares you for the next step in your career. If you have the want, desire, and drive you can apply for our apprentice program which fast-tracks you to becoming a mechanic in about 6 months. If you decide that the fast-paced apprentice program is not for you, you can continue to hone your skills at your own pace to get to that next position of mechanic. If you find that your interest lies more with helping and interacting with people, then you would have the opportunity to move to the service desk as a service advisor.

Mechanic

As a Mechanic you will bring the skills you have in basic brake services, suspension and basic electrical systems and then have the opportunity to continue building your knowledge in more advanced aspects of these system. Further training takes place through self-paced modules as well as instructor lead classes located in one of our many training facilities. You will be able to expand your knowledge of various advanced systems on the vehicle such as air conditioning, ABS systems, and drivability. Further advancement of your career is achieved not only through training but by attaining your first two ASE’s through its nationally recognized certification testing, which Pep Boys sponsors. Completion of your first two ASE certifications will enable you to be reclassified and promoted to the next position of Technician “B” which starts your ultimate past and goal to becoming a “Master Technician”.

Should you decide that management is the direction they want their career to go in, then you will have opportunities to move to the service desk as well.

Tech B

The Tech B position is for that individual who already has experience in the automotive repair industry and has obtained their G1, A4 and A5 ASE certification. As a Tech B you should be well versed in steering, suspension and alignment services; brake services; and cooling system services. You will have an opportunity to increase your knowledge and become proficient in electrical repair, AC service, engine diagnostic and repair services. Part of your learning experience will be computer based E-Learning that will include modules that cover advanced theory of automotive systems as well as instructor led training.

The training path is designed to expand your knowledge and experience to prepare you for the next step in your path. Typically, that next step is a Tech A which will require you to obtain 2 additional ASE certifications. You can choose any two additional certifications out of the following four: A1 (engine repair), A6 (electrical/electronic systems), A7 (heating and air conditioning), A8 (engine performance). If you find that your interest lies more with helping and interacting with people, then you would have the opportunity to move to the service desk and begin a path in store operations and management.

Tech A

The Tech A position is for the individual who is looking to move into the more advanced systems beyond a Tech B’s expertise. As a Tech A, you will already possess the skills needed to be able to work on and diagnose Suspension, Brake, Electrical and A/C systems. In this position you will be working to increase your skills in the more advanced repairs just listed, and working toward Engine Diagnostic repairs as well as emission systems. You will be learning and working with advanced diagnostic and scan equipment. To further your career, we give you the opportunity to advance your knowledge with E-learning modules and Instructor-Lead (ILT) classes. Some examples of the challenging ILT classes would include topics such as: ABS sensor diagnosing and repair, ignition misfire diagnosis, and using your Lab Scope.

For the Tech A you must possess the ASE’s, G1 – Auto Maintenance and Repair, A4 – Suspension and Steering and A5 – Brakes, and then any two of the following,

  1. A1, Engine repair
  2. A6, Electrical
  3. A7, Heating and Air Conditioning
  4. A8, Engine Performance

All of this prepares you for the next step in your career which would be the Mastertech position.

Assistant Service Manager

The Assistant Service Manager (ASM) position is for the energetic individual who is looking to have a career in the automotive repair industry, providing support to the Service Manager while leading a team of service sales associates and shop associates to achieve company performance goals. This includes customer service, delegating and controlling work flow, parts sourcing and inventory control, timely updates on the status of repairs, and facility maintenance. As an ASM you will have the opportunity to gain experience and grow under the guidance of an experienced Service Manager and take on a leadership role in the Service Department.

Part of your learning experience will be computer based E-Learning that will include modules that cover basic theory of automotive systems, leadership skills, and management functions, along with instructor-lead training. All of this prepares you for the next step in your career, as a Service Manager of your own Service Department.

Master Technician

The Position of Master Technician allows the associate to use their experience, knowledge, and technical skills to diagnosis and repair complicated vehicle issues that come into the service bays. Master Technicians also help develop Technicians and Mechanics working in our locations by acting as a consultant for diagnostic work, vehicle repairs and procedures. A Master Technician observes and follows all necessary safety regulations when operating machinery, equipment, and tools and is an example to the other technicians in the shop. If interested, Master Technicians can also become a Training Tech for an apprentice as part of the company’s apprentice program.

The next step in your career path, if you desire, would be Service Management where you would be running one of our locations or possibly a future position as an Area Director in charge of several store and service locations. Another career path possibility would be the position of Technical Trainer. The trainer position is an associate who is primarily responsible for Technician training to all our service personnel both in a class room and in a store location.

Store Manager of Service

Our Store Manager of Service position is for the energetic detail-oriented leader that will oversee all aspects of a service repair facility. This includes customer service, delegating and controlling work flow, parts sourcing, inventory control, timely updates on the status of repairs and facility maintenance. This position will allow you to provide a high source of knowledge and information to team members, that will help achieve company sales and profitability goals. You will help to develop and forward your teams future career growth though our company’s training resources. Your will have computer based ELearning as well as Instructor Lead training that will provide you with more advance selling skills, best practices on coaching your team for success and advanced leadership skills.

This role and training will provide invaluable experience and future growth potential for the next step of Area Director and or Sales Trainer that will provide you with the skills to be a successful multiunit manager.

Area Director

The Area Director (AD) role is for the self-motivated individual who is looking to provide leadership, operational support, team building, and development of a culture of customer service excellence in a multiunit management position, to an assigned group of stores within an area. As an Area Director you will be empowered to build your team and challenge your managers and store associates to achieve company performance goals. Area Directors must be able to manage from afar and have effective communication skills through many different communication channels. You will use the phone, conference calls, email and one-on-one interactions to build relationships and motivate field and store support staff to maximize productivity and business opportunities.

Part of your learning experience will be computer based E-Learning that will include modules that cover basic theory of automotive systems, leadership skills, and management functions, along with instructor lead training.
